In 2023, less than 100 companies joined the global unicorn club, the lowest number since 2017. However, in this decline, data presented by AltIndex.com represents, one in five new billion-dollar startups in 2023 were artificial intelligence companies.

A decade after the term “unicorn” was made to mark private startups valued at $1 billion or more, the number of these companies hit more than 1,500 globally, with a collective value of more than a whopping $5 trillion. But joining the global unicorn club has become much harder than before despite huge investor interest in some markets.

According to Crunchbase data, only 95 companies joined the global unicorn list last year, one-third of the figure seen in 2022 and six times less than the number of new unicorns in 2021, still the record year by the number of new $1 billion worth startups.

Of the 95 companies that hit a valuation of $1 billion or more, one-fifth, or 20, were from the AI sector, mainly from the generative AI market. These companies have collectively added more than $35 billion in value to the global unicorn club. Statistics show fintech was the sector with the second-highest number of new unicorns, with 14 in 2023. Cleantech, energy, and semiconductors followed with 12 and 9 new unicorns, respectively. Analyzed by geography, almost half of all new unicorns were from the United States. Another 24 were from China, while India and the United Kingdom had three.

With 20 new companies joining the global unicorn list in 2023 and three more in the first quarter of this year, the total number of startups in the AI sector valued at $1 billion or more hit 214.

The generative AI company, OpenAI, is the most valuable among them, with a valuation of $80 billion as of this month, $15 billion more than the Chinese ecommerce giant Stripe or the US payments provider, Stripe. Statistics show Databricks is the second most valuable AI unicorn globally, with a valuation of $43 billion. The San Francisco-based AI safety and research company, follows with a $16 billion valuation, respectively.

Awiros, a deep-tech startup that develops an AI-based computer vision platform primarily for video processing, has secured US$7 million in an equity financing round led by Inflexor Ventures and Exfinity Venture Partners.

VedaVC, leading family offices and UHNIs also joined the round.

The company will utilise the funding for product enhancement, building its developer community, and business growth in India and overseas markets.

It will also allow Awiros to augment the India and US teams.

Enterprises have been actively deploying Video AI solutions across automation, safety and process monitoring where the market is projected to reach $27 billion by 2030, based on various research studies.

Founded in 2015 by Vikram Gupta and Yatin Kavishwar, Awiros offers a marketplace of video AI apps that allows its customers to discover and adopt suitable technology solutions quickly. It is accelerating the adoption of this technology, where its average customer subscribes to more than 10 apps today, up from four in 2019.

Awiros is a device-agnostic Operating System (OS) for easy development and delivery of Video AI applications. The OS eliminates the need for enterprise clients to upgrade, redesign, or reinstall new systems as the enterprise’s Video AI use cases increase.

The platform also abstracts out all the tedious workflow around computer vision-based AI models and lets developers concentrate on building efficient models, resulting in faster development and deployment cycles for enterprise-grade applications.

The firm claims it has several Fortune 500 customers and large-scale Video AI deployments across manufacturing, warehousing, data centres, critical infrastructure and public safety.

Shortly, Awiros aims to be the default platform for computer vision use-cases that would allow any developer to create and deploy computer vision applications in large-scale projects in a friction-less manner and create an ecosystem that allows the best apps to thrive, much like the app-stores for smartphones.

Jatin Desai, Managing Partner at Inflexor Ventures added, “As cameras become even more ubiquitous globally there will be a huge addressable market for their products. Awiros investment fits very well with Inflexor’s deeptech/tech IP theme and backing solid founders in this space”.

Chinnu Senthilkumar, Managing Partner at Exfinity Venture Partners added, “Awiros’s approach is analogous to Android O/S which enables and empowers the customer to design and deploy AI-based solutions for their business needs quickly. Awiros has excellent business synergy with our portfolio company Kinara (erstwhile Deepvision) wherein they will be able to co-develop solutions in domains such as retail automation, smart buildings, Industry 4.0 etc. for Fortune 500 clients.”

Bengaluru-based advanced battery technology and deep-technology start-up Log9 Materials has announced entering a strategic collaboration, initiated through a recently-signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with Hyderabad-headquartered EV manufacturer Gravton Motors. The MOU will pave the way for a long-term partnership that would mainly encompass rolling out an electric bike manufactured by Gravton Motors and InstaCharged by Log9’s cutting-edge InstaCharge battery technology; this integrated model has been named ‘Gravton RapidEV’.

Notably, the Gravton RapidEV e-2W has been specifically designed and introduced to transform the last-mile logistics and delivery segment in India by bringing to the fore superior technology and advanced features to the market, which in turn can deliver superior profitability for the delivery-fleet operators of our country. Powered by Log9 batteries and a high-power motor, the Gravton RapidEV gets fully charged (from 0 to 100 percent) in 15 minutes, and offers a load carrying capacity of up to 250 kgs and gradeability of up to 22 degrees. In addition, it also comes with a long life of 10+ years, best-in-class safety, and proven reliability throughout the complete life of the vehicle, as well as a class-leading 5 years and unlimited kms warranty on both on the vehicle and its battery.

With its robust built and high stability, this Gravton Quanta model – an all-terrain EV – holds the distinction of having travelled from Kanyakumari to Khardung La successfully. Giving further impetus to Log9’s Responsible Delivery Movement, the Gravton RapidEV InstaCharged by Log9 will eventually go a long way in making deliveries greener and in reducing the carbon footprint of the last-mile logistics sector in India. Against typical electric 2Ws that may take up to 2.5 hours to charge — which technically leads to the delivery partner (end-user) losing out on an average of 3 to 4 deliveries per hour – the Gravton rapidEV will ensure that the delivery partners can stay on-the-go for the maximum amount of time, thereby increasing their opportunity for revenues and profitability enhancement while also in parallel enabling them to contribute towards sustainability and fighting climate change.

Speaking about the collaboration, Kartik Hajela, Co-Founder & COO, Log9 Materials says, “We are pleased to partner with Gravton Motors for the integration of Log9’s battery packs and InstaCharge technology into the RapidEV 2Ws manufactured by them. As a Responsible Energy pioneer, we are confident that our InstaCharge batteries’ integration with the Indigenously built Gravton RapidEV e-bikes will provide the much-needed Power, Performance, and Peace of Mind for the B2B last-mile delivery sector and shall further help the cause of reducing operational costs as well as lowering emissions footprint for the delivery and logistics sector. Furthermore, it also provides a great value addition opportunity in the commercial EV space due to the long life, superfast charging, and superlative performance of the Gravton RapidEV.”

Parshuram Paka, Founder& CEO, Gravton Motors says, “‘Gravton RapidEV is an impeccable all terrain EV model which is an outcome of the all-round efforts of Gravton Motor’s technical team. We are pleased to partner with Log9 in a bid to introduce fast-charging capabilities into this e-bike, which in turn is bound to take its utility and efficiency to a whole new level and also help delivery partners riding the bike to make more money per shift while making sustainable deliveries seamlessly.”

Gravton Motors makes electric bikes that are unconventional in thought, design, and performance, thereby helping India take a ride towards a sustainable future and facilitating urban commute to switch from fuel-run vehicles to clean and sustainable electric vehicles. On the other hand, Log9 has leveraged its cell-to-pack competency to develop its InstaCharge batteries for EVs that provide 9x faster charging, 9x better performance, and 9x battery life. Log9’s InstaCharge technology brings down the total charging time which further optimizes the utilization of charging infrastructure and operational profitability for fleets. In addition, Log9’s RapidX batteries are built to operate across -30° to 60° C and come with an operational life of 15,000+ cycles, thereby providing a seamless experience and entirely revolutionizing the last-mile logistics sector.

Working closely with the government, GoMedii aims to organise the highly fragment medical tourism industry by bringing all services under one roof.

Rohit Singh, Co-founder, GoMedii, said that the brand has been playing an active role as an MVTF in Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the SAARC regions that are the primary markets for medical tourism in India, with Bangladesh and Africa contributing a lion’s share of traffic.

“Government initiative of ‘Heal in India’ will strengthen Medical Tourism and would help the healthcare industry take a big leap. The need of the hour is a robust public-private partnership with MVTFs playing the role of a key stakeholder and drive the business by generating leads in different source countries,” said Rohit.

Rohit pointed out that Africa remains a largely untapped market offering great potential.

“The major performing markets that we see with huge potential to boost the medical tourism sector in India are the African countries like Nigeria, Congo, Ethiopia and more, hence, making the African continent a prime performing market for GoMedii,” said Rohit.

Abhishek Chandel, Co-Founder, said that empowering patients and their families with the right information remains the key and now GoMedii boasts a network of 100 plus hospitals providing quality and affordable treatment.

“We come first in the patient treatment value chain right from the hospital discovery phase and be with the patient in entire treatment journey through an ecosystem of 100+ Hospitals, 500+Doctors, partners, interpreters and pre-post treatment care,” said Abhishek.

GoMedii aims to bank on India’s quality and affordable healthcare as well as budget friendly allied services that make treatment costs 50-80% less vis-a-vis other popular medical tourism destinations like Turkey and Malaysia.

“Besides the significant cost factors, the high number of reputed workforce of the best doctors in the country, state-of-art hospitals, lesser waiting time for appointment, affordable tertiary services, and other medical infrastructure, make India most preferred destination for international patients. We plan to expand our reach across our prime performing markets in the world by empowering the patients and their families with the right transparent knowledge through a well-established partner’s-network,” said Abhishek.

With an aim to give a structure to the fragmented medical tourism industry in India, Rohit said that GoMedii is focusing on three key things – provide technology-driven healthcare solutions; empower patients with reliable information; formalize and give a structure to the medical tourism sector.

Patient data on GoMedii suggests that most of the African patients are coming to India for transplant surgeries, IVF treatment, knee replacements, and oncology treatment. Over the years, patients from Gulf countries have also preferred Indian health care with most of the traffic coming from UAE, Oman, Iraq, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Most of the patients from Gulf countries come to India for orthopaedics, cardiac, bariatric surgery, and cosmetic treatments.

Patients from Cambodia, Myanmar, Maldives, and Uzbekistan have started preferring India over Malaysia for cosmetic surgery, dental treatment, organ related treatments, and orthopedic surgery.

ChefKart, a Gurugram-based at-home cooking services platform, has raised $2 million in a seed round of funding led by Pravega Ventures and Blume Ventures.

Deepinder Goyal, Titan Capital, Kunal Shah, Tremis Capital, Lets Venture, and other prominent angels also joined.

The capital will be utilized for expansion to new geographical territories.

ChefKart was founded in 2020 by Vaibhav Gupta, Aman Gupta and Arpit Gupta to solve the problem of the lack of reliable at-home cooking services. It upskills local cooks into trained and professional home chefs.

The company has also built hyperlocal marketing and established supply control in Gurugram, with strategic plans for the upcoming expansion to other regions.

ChefKart launched new lines of business, such as chefs for parties.

Vaibhav Gupta, CEO and Founder, ChefKart, said, “We have served over 3,200+ families and are managing over 2,300+ cooking sessions daily with a 15 per cent m-o-m growth.”

According to a FICCI-PwC report, the Indian food services market is valued at INR 5,52,000 crores in 2022, with the unorganised sector claiming over 57 per cent of the market share. There is a huge demand for reliable cooking services. ChefKart aims to bridge this gap by transforming this untapped sector’s workers into reliable service providers.

xQ, an edutech startup that teaches kids the art and science of video creation, has raised $1.4 million from a Gujarat-based angel syndicate.

A select group of HNIs, including senior leadership personnel from Google, Deloitte, Tata 1mg, Axis Capital, and international photographer Joseph Radhik, also participated.

xQ will use the capital to expand its reach in schools through its flagship offering – the xQ Video Lab. It is a space within schools, like a computer lab or a physics lab, dedicated to teaching kids video creation skills.

The startup was founded by IIM alumni Simon Jacob and Kartik Talwar in 2021 in collaboration with professional filmmakers, educators and advertising professionals.

xQ offers access to a video creation curriculum, state-of-the-art shooting gear and access to an e-learning platform. This allows students to continue learning and practising their video-making skills at home.

“Video is the language of the future”, said CEO Simon Jacob. “It is no longer a good-to-have extracurricular activity and if we want to introduce video-creation as a core skill to children at scale, it needs to be a part of the school curriculum.”

xQ has built a strong academic team led by an ex-headmistress and award-winning filmmakers to fine-tune their video-creation curriculum. The team is building a library of over 1,000 video-based curriculum projects where children can integrate video-making techniques like transitions, green screen shooting and stop motion animation into curricular projects for subjects like maths, science, social sciences and English.

To make learning immersive and personalised through video-creation, xQ is also building a digital learning platform designed to be a safe space for children to learn video creation techniques, showcase their videos to students across the globe and learn new skills from each other in the process.

To date, xQ has educated over 6,000 students across eight countries in video-making, and it is now on a mission to touch at least one million lives by 2025.
